Waldemar Sjolander (1908 - 1988) was a lyrical, color-driven Swedish painter whose work took a dramatic shift after his permanent relocation to Mexico in 1946. Prior to moving, he drew heavy influence from French masters like Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. Once in Mexico, his work gradually transformed as he aligned himself with a group of artists called the Generacion de la Ruptura (the Rupture Generation); a movement which broke away form social realism in favor of free abstraction. His work can be found in the public collections of several museums, including the Göteborgs Konstmuseum in Sweden and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City.
