Waldemar Solander (1908 - 1988) was a prominent Swedish modernist painter known for his vibrant, expressive works that blended European Expressionism with Mexican culture. Sjolander made a dramatic artistic shift upon his relocation from Sweden to Mexico in 1946, trading Northern European Expressionism for radical Latin American abstraction. While his early work was heavily influenced by French masters Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, his work made in Mexico focused on intense sunlight, tropical nature, and the vibrant street colors of Mexico City and Oaxaca.
