Torsten Renqvist (1924 - 2007) was a prominent Swedish expressionist painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. While initially celebrated as a painter and printmaker, Renqvist famously burned many of his original paintings mid-career and transitions largely into sculpting out of wood and bronze. Today, most of his surviving works are prominently featured in the Swedish museums Moderna Museet and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. His 1950s original drawings hold massive significance because they represent the birth of Swedish Neo-Expressionism, while also capturing a raw, existential turning point in his career just before the destruction of his early work. This example is an excellent piece of art history.
